While Waymo has been cruising the streets of San Francisco for years, Uber isn’t sitting idle anymore. The rideshare giant just dropped a bombshell partnership with Lucid and Nuro, announcing plans to deploy at least 20,000 autonomous EVs starting in 2026. Yeah, that’s right. Twenty thousand robot cars. Waymo’s 800-vehicle fleet suddenly doesn’t seem so impressive.
The trio revealed their modified Lucid Gravity last month, already hitting Bay Area roads with over 100 prototypes. Human operators are still babysitting for now. Can’t have the robots going rogue just yet. Testing first, world domination later.

This isn’t some half-baked concept car, either. Production kicks off late next year at Lucid’s Casa Grande, Arizona factory, with San Francisco getting first dibs on the six-passenger robotaxis. The vehicles pack everything you’d expect: cameras, lidar, radar, and that distinctive roof-mounted sensor halo that screams “I’m autonomous!” to everyone within eyeshot.
Uber’s not playing around with the interior, either. Interactive screens show passengers exactly what the AI “sees” – pedestrians, traffic lights, that dog that darted into the street. Heated seats and custom climate controls, too. Because apparently robot cars need to be fancier than human-driven ones. Passengers can also utilize emergency options to contact support or request the vehicle to pull over if needed.
The company’s strategy is actually pretty clever. Rather than building everything themselves (like Waymo), Uber’s partnering with everyone: Aurora, Motional, Pony AI, even Stellantis for another 5,000 vehicles. They’ve got Nvidia’s AI brains powering the whole operation, aiming for a ridiculous 100,000 robotaxis by 2027.
But the big question remains: Can they actually pull this off? Regulatory approval isn’t guaranteed, and Waymo’s planning to hit 20+ cities with a million weekly rides by 2026. Tesla’s Cybercab is lurking in the wings, too.
One thing’s clear though – Uber’s throwing serious cash at not being left behind. Three hundred million bucks says they’re dead serious about this robotaxi revolution.
