Despite the Trump administration’s efforts to slow renewable energy, a new poll shows 70% of Trump voters support utility-scale solar power. The poll also found 75% believe solar strengthens the nation’s energy supply. These numbers clash sharply with the administration’s current energy policies.
Two separate polls captured these results. Kellyanne Conway surveyed 1,000 voters across Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Texas. Pollster Tony Fabrizio, who ran surveys for Trump’s campaign, surveyed 800 Republican-leaning voters. Both polls found strong support for solar energy among right-leaning Americans.
The numbers go beyond simple approval. About 83% of all voters and 75% of Trump voters favor expanding solar energy. Three-quarters of Trump voters in key states like Texas and Florida back solar growth. Additionally, 68% of Republican-leaning voters agree that solar helps lower electricity costs. Another 79% want solar to compete freely without political interference.
The administration’s actions tell a different story. The Interior Department has reportedly delayed or frozen some renewable energy permits. Budget rules are speeding up the end of project subsidies. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act would eliminate solar tax credits entirely. Senate Democrats have cited Trump’s permit delays in resisting energy reform negotiations. Conway’s poll found that 74% of Trump voters support scrapping those same solar tax credits, revealing a sharp tension between backing solar expansion and opposing the incentives that fund it.
Red states are actually leading the solar boom. Last year, an estimated large majority of new US solar capacity was built in states that voted for Trump. Texas leads the country in utility-scale solar generation. Most of the top solar-installing states voted for Trump in 2024. Low costs and fast construction are driving solar growth in these states.
Solar manufacturing is also growing fast in Republican districts. A large share of solar manufacturing investments since 2022 have reportedly gone to GOP districts. First Solar has made major investments in US manufacturing, employing thousands of American workers, and is expanding its capacity by 2027. The company commissioned the Fabrizio poll to highlight that utility-scale solar serves as a commonsense solution for lowering costs, improving grid reliability, and creating American jobs.
Politically, the polls suggest real consequences. About 52% of Republican-leaning voters say they’re more likely to support candidates who back all-of-the-above energy plans. The data shows that Trump’s anti-renewables push doesn’t reflect what many of his own supporters actually want.
