tesla google form coalition 180b grid savings

Tesla and Google have joined a new industry coalition called Utilize, launched on March 10, 2026, to help cut electricity costs across the US. Other founding members include Carrier, Renew Home, Sparkfund, SPAN, and Verrus. The group plans to work with lawmakers and regulators to unlock unused power grid capacity.

Tesla and Google are among the founding members of Utilize, a new coalition aimed at cutting US electricity costs.

A Duke University analysis found the US grid runs at just 53% of its average capacity. The coalition says tapping into that idle capacity could save consumers a lot of money. The Brattle Group, an independent research firm, estimates the savings could reach up to $180 billion over the next decade.

The coalition’s plan relies on several technologies. These include battery storage, smart algorithms, machine learning, and distributed energy resources. The goal is to manage the grid in real time and use power more efficiently. Unlike green hydrogen, which requires over 50 kilowatt-hours of electricity to produce just one kilogram of usable fuel, battery storage technologies offer far greater efficiency in storing and returning energy to the grid.

Tesla’s role is a big one. The company’s energy storage deployments hit 46.7 GWh in 2025, and its energy revenues reached $12.7 billion, a 27% jump from the year before. Tesla also runs virtual power plants in California that delivered over 100 MW. Its Powershare Grid Support Program lets Cybertruck owners send power back to the grid in Texas through vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology. A new Megapack factory in Houston is targeting 50 GWh of annual output by the end of 2026.

Google’s involvement ties to its growing energy needs. The company spent $4.75 billion on energy infrastructure for its data centers. It also triggered 1.9 GW of clean energy for a Minnesota data center. US data center electricity demand is projected to hit 75.8 GW in 2026 and could reach 134.4 GW by 2030.

Beyond savings, Utilize says better grid use could cut carbon emissions by up to 20%. It’s also expected to improve grid reliability and boost energy efficiency for businesses. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has highlighted that 30% of electricity generated in the US is currently wasted due to grid inefficiencies.

The broader industry context adds urgency. Hyperscalers are expected to spend over $1 trillion on infrastructure in 2025 and 2026, and power availability’s already limiting data center expansion in many areas. Virginia became the coalition’s first major policy win, with SB 621 and HB 434 passing with bipartisan support, requiring utilities to measure and report grid utilization rates.
