Three decades into the renewable energy revolution, and the world is finally starting to get its act together. Global renewable energy now accounts for 29.1% of electricity generation – not terrible, but not exactly breaking speed records either. The good news? That number’s expected to hit 35% by 2025, proving that maybe, just maybe, we’re not completely dropping the ball on this whole clean energy thing.
Solar and wind are the dynamic duo of the renewable world, contributing 11.7% to the global electricity mix. But let’s not forget hydropower, the OG of clean energy, still dominating at 15.9%. Money talks, and it’s speaking volumes. Global investment in clean energy hit $1.3 trillion in 2022, with renewables outpacing fossil fuels 10 to 1. China’s not messing around, accounting for 55% of global renewable investment. Private sector money is pouring in too, hitting a record $71 billion in Q3 2024. The US is making major moves with the Inflation Reduction Act providing $370 billion for clean energy investments.
Looking ahead, renewables are projected to supply 46% of global electricity by 2030. Solar PV is set to become the world’s largest electricity source by 2027, and wind and solar combined will overtake coal by 2025.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though – grid integration issues, supply chain constraints, and regulatory red tape are still throwing wrenches in the works.
