europe s 4 900 ev boosts bev share to 19 3

Europe’s electric car market is shifting fast. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) grabbed 19.3% of the EU market in January 2026. That’s up from 14.9% in January 2025. One factor helping drive that growth is an affordable electric car like the Renault 5, now available to European buyers.

BEVs jumped from 14.9% to 19.3% of the EU market in just one year. The shift is accelerating fast.

In total, 154,230 new battery-electric cars were registered in the EU during January 2026. Across the broader European market, including the EU, EFTA, and UK, BEV sales rose 13.9% year-on-year. That brought the total to approximately 195,000 units. BEV sales in the EU alone jumped 24.2%.

Overall, new EU car registrations actually fell 3.9% in January 2026. Around 800,000 passenger cars were sold across Europe. But even with that drop, electrified vehicles kept gaining ground. A full 69% of new passenger cars sold in Europe were electrified, including BEVs, plug-in hybrids, and standard hybrids.

Hybrid-electric cars led all categories with 308,364 registrations and a 38.6% market share. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also grew fast, reaching 78,741 units and a 9.8% share, up from 7.4% the year before. Meanwhile, petrol and diesel cars combined fell to just 30.1% of the market, down from 39.5%.

Country results were mixed. France saw BEV registrations jump 52.1%. Germany posted gains of about 24%. Denmark’s EV sales rose 52.7%. But the Netherlands dropped 35.4% and Belgium fell 11.5%.

On the manufacturer side, Volkswagen Group led the EV segment with a 26% share. BMW held 7.3%, and Hyundai-Kia reached about 8%. Chinese automaker BYD made a big move, entering the top three EV brands with a 6.8% share. Stellantis held around 10%.

Analysts noted that cheaper EVs and more competition are helping push sales higher. BYD and other new players have brought more affordable options to European buyers. With BEVs already near 20% market share in January, some expect that figure could reach 25% by the end of 2026. The data suggests the shift away from petrol and diesel is continuing to pick up speed. The Renault 5 claimed the top spot among individual BEV models in January 2026, recording 8,165 registrations across Europe. Italy and Spain contributed strongly to plug-in hybrid momentum, with Italy posting +134.2% PHEV growth and Spain recording a 66.7% increase in January 2026.
