While Chinese manufacturers continue their global expansion in the solar sector, US firms still maintain critical positions at the top of the tracker market. NextPower, an American company, snagged the top spot in Wood Mackenzie’s H1 2025 global PV tracker ranking. Not to be outdone, China’s Trina Tracker secured second place, with another US firm, Array Technologies, rounding out the top three. Talk about a trans-Pacific tug-of-war.
The ranking isn’t just about who ships the most units. Wood Mackenzie’s methodology gets pretty specific – 30% of the score comes from ESG and CSR adherence. Apparently, being green while making green technology matters. Shocker.
Green credentials aren’t just nice-to-haves in solar – they’re 30% of what makes a market leader. Who knew?
Other criteria include aftersales service (15%), R&D (15%), and supply chain stability (15%). The rest? A mixed bag of capacity utilization, certifications, finances, and manufacturing experience.
Grade A manufacturers – those meeting at least five performance criteria – dominated the market with 99% of global tracker shipments. Six of the top 10 achieved EcoVadis bronze ratings or higher for sustainability. Not just making solar trackers, but making them responsibly. Revolutionary concept. Many of these companies are also investing in renewable energy credits to further enhance their sustainability profiles and reduce carbon footprints.
Eight of the top 10 manufacturers saw revenue growth in 2024. Money talks. The listed companies showed stronger financial transparency, which probably helps them sleep better at night.
Though financial conditions only account for 5% of the scoring, it’s still enough to matter.
These companies aren’t resting on their laurels. All top 10 are investing in AI-integrated control systems and high-strength materials to handle wind and tricky terrain. Chinese OEMs in the top rankings have been expanding overseas production to gain better market access in key regions. The assessment evaluated 24 manufacturers from five countries worldwide, showcasing the truly global nature of the solar tracker industry. Innovation doesn’t stop at the hardware – it extends to ESG initiatives and supply chain resilience.
The industry’s consolidating around excellence and best practices. Timothy Shen points out that competitive advantage comes via ESG, service quality, and supply chains. The 24 manufacturers across five countries are finding that meeting benchmarks isn’t optional anymore. It’s survival.
And in this solar showdown, both American and Chinese firms are bringing their A-game.
