BYD has introduced its 1000 kW Super E-Platform, a new charging system that can add 400 km of range in just 5 minutes. That works out to about 2 km of range per second. The system debuts with two new models, the Han L and Tang L. BYD says it wants charging an electric car to feel as fast as filling up a gas tank.
BYD’s new Super E-Platform adds 400 km of range in just 5 minutes — charging that rivals a gas station stop.
The numbers behind this platform are hard to ignore. It runs on 1000 volts and 1000 amps, hitting a peak power of 1000 kW. That’s double what the current industry leaders offer. It can fully charge a battery in just 6 minutes. Even at 90% charge, it still delivers 600 kW of power.
The battery tech is also new. BYD’s second-generation Blade battery uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry. It’s got ultra-fast ion channels that cut internal resistance by 50%. The electrolyte has been upgraded too, switching from a standard formula to one with higher conductivity. The result is a 10C charging rate, which BYD says is the highest among mass-produced electric vehicles.
The motors are no slouch either. The rear motor puts out 580 kW, spins above 30,000 rpm, and delivers 788 horsepower. Add the front motor’s 312 horsepower, and the total system output reaches 1,100 horsepower. BYD claims its motor has the highest power density in the industry.
To make this work, BYD built new charging hardware. It uses next-gen silicon carbide chips rated at 1,500 volts. The charging terminal is fully liquid-cooled and can output up to 1,360 kW. Each station includes a 225 kWh buffer battery to help manage grid demand and keep costs down.
BYD plans to build over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China. The first 1,000 kW site is already running near Shenzhen. BYD officially unveiled the platform at a livestream event in Shenzhen. By comparison, rivals like Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Model Y reportedly take around 15 to 18 minutes for a 20% to 80% charge, underscoring just how significant BYD’s speed claims are. But there’s a catch. The timeline for all 4,000 stations hasn’t been shared. The system only works with compatible infrastructure. Battery capacity specs haven’t been revealed. And for now, it’s limited to specific models. Real-world results may also differ from internal tests.
