Brazil’s Bold Hydrogen Revolution: Will It Dominate Global Clean Energy Markets?

While other nations talk about green energy, Brazil is busy making it happen. The country just snagged the top spot in Latin America for renewable hydrogen development according to the H2LAC Index 2025. Not too shabby for a nation sometimes overlooked in global energy conversations. They’re not just showing up—they’re showing off.

Brazil’s hydrogen production costs are headed south, fast. Analysts project green hydrogen will cost just $1.50/kg by 2030, dropping to $1.25/kg by 2040. That’s competitive. Really competitive. Especially when you consider what importers in the US and EU might pay. We’re looking at a potential $1-2 billion export market by 2030, ballooning to $4-6 billion by 2040. Cash flow, anyone?

The secret sauce? Brazil has the cleanest electricity among G20 members. Period. Wind, solar, hydro—they’ve got it all, and they’re adding 15 GW more by 2025. Renewable resources that make European nations green with envy. Despite their abundance, these resources still face storage challenges that Brazil’s engineers are working to overcome.

But here’s the kicker—the domestic market is where the real money sits. Current demand sits at 2.1 Mt, mostly for refining and industrial uses. But that could jump 67% to 6.8 Mt by 2030. Trucking, green steel, industrial energy—all hungry for hydrogen. The domestic market alone could reach a staggering $10-12 billion by 2040.

Big players aren’t sleeping, either. Petrobras is throwing R$33 billion at refining modernization. They’re exploring blue hydrogen with carbon capture. Vale’s partnering with Green Park Energy for green hydrogen production. The Brazilian government has reinforced its commitment through the National H2 Program launched in August 2021, which aims to foster a competitive hydrogen market. The country’s rapid advancement is evident in their impressive regulatory framework progress, which has been highlighted as a key factor in their H2LAC Index leadership. Smart money is moving.

Brazil’s National Energy Plan 2050 calls hydrogen a “disruptive technology.” No kidding. With solid regulations, consumption quotas for sustainable aviation fuels, and certification systems already in place, Brazil isn’t just participating in the hydrogen economy—it’s positioning to run the show.

The question isn’t if Brazil will be a hydrogen powerhouse. It’s how dominant they’ll become.
