How much will Americans pay to power the nation’s growing fleet of data centers? That question is becoming urgent. Residential electricity prices rose by 11.5% in 2025, outpacing inflation, and are expected to increase by up to 40% by 2030 compared to 2025 levels. Bank of America now calls affordability pressure the top risk facing regulated utilities in 2026. With midterm elections that year, rising bills are becoming a political issue too.
Rising electricity bills are becoming a political flashpoint as data center demand collides with household affordability concerns ahead of 2026 midterms.
The scale of new demand is staggering. U.S. data centers are expected to reach 75.8 GW of power demand in 2026, then grow to 134.4 GW by 2030. By 2030, data center electricity consumption could nearly triple from 2024 levels, with projections ranging from 325–790 TWh depending on the model.
Utilities are spending big to keep up. 60% of industry respondents plan to adopt high-voltage central busways to manage rising density and improve scalability.
But the grid can’t keep pace. About 30% of planned U.S. data center capacity now relies on behind-the-meter resources. In Virginia, data centers already consumed 26% of the state’s electricity in 2023. Virginia’s governor has issued an executive order for an energy cost review. Several states are already responding to bill pressures, with New Jersey moving to freeze electricity cost increases and expand distributed energy resources.
On-site power is filling the void. About 30% of planned U.S. data center capacity now relies on behind-the-meter resources. Developers are blending natural gas turbines, batteries, solar, and even geothermal energy. Cities like Georgetown, Texas and Denton, Texas have already demonstrated that large-scale wind and solar sourcing can reliably meet municipal electricity demands at stable costs. The buildout is massive. The question remains: who picks up the tab?
