bev sales increase unexpectedly

Nearly every corner of the European automotive market is witnessing an electric surge. Battery-electric vehicles have captured a stunning 16.9% of EU market share through November 2025, crushing last year’s 13.4% figure.

That’s over 1.6 million new battery-electric cars hitting European roads this year alone. Not too shabby for a technology some “experts” claimed would never catch on.

Electric vehicles aren’t just surviving in Europe—they’re thriving. So much for those skeptical “experts.”

The numbers don’t lie. Europe’s EV market jumped 36% year-over-year in November, with BEV sales specifically climbing 35%. Total EV sales for 2025 so far? A whopping 3.8 million units. That’s 33% growth compared to last year. Told you so.

Germany’s leading the charge with a 41.3% increase in battery-electric registrations. Some countries are absolutely crushing it with combined BEV and PHEV adoption—Belgium at 42%, Austria at 31%, and Germany at 28%.

Even more impressive? Poland’s BEV registrations skyrocketed 107%. Spain? Up 89%. Not exactly the market collapse doomsayers predicted.

Hybrids remain popular too, grabbing 34.6% of EU market share. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids reached over 912,000 units, representing 9.3% of registrations. Up from 7.1% last year. The shift is happening. Fast.

The losers? Traditional petrol and diesel. Their combined market share plummeted to 36.1%, down from 45.8% last year. That’s what we call disruption, folks. Major markets like France have seen steep drops (-32.1%) in petrol car registrations.

European carmakers are adapting—they have to. All are on track to comply with CO₂ regulations through 2027, boosting their BEV sales 38% in early 2025.

They’re expected to reach 25% BEV share over the 2025-2027 period. This shift aligns perfectly with global trends showing renewable investments outpacing fossil fuels at a ratio of $1.70 to every dollar.

Italy has become another success story with record EV sales in November thanks to new incentives targeting older ICE vehicle replacement.
