While California residents struggle with frequent power outages, Polestar has revealed a solution that could change the game. The Swedish automaker has launched bi-directional charging technology for its Polestar 3 models, allowing these electric vehicles to power homes during blackouts. Finally, a practical use for that expensive EV sitting in your garage!

The system uses DC-based technology to transfer energy from vehicle to home, effectively turning Polestar 3s into giant backup batteries. Not all models qualify, though. Only those with 400V electrical architecture can participate, and sorry to owners of the 800V models – you’re out of luck.

Polestar didn’t go it alone. They partnered with dcbel, a home energy company that provides the necessary hardware – specifically their Aria home energy system. It’s this integration that enables the magic to happen. When the power goes out, the system kicks in automatically. No fumbling with generators in the dark.

The backup power isn’t just a trickle, either. Depending on home energy usage, a fully-charged Polestar 3 can potentially keep a house running for up to 10 days. That’s a lot of Netflix during your next blackout.

There’s a financial upside too. Users could save up to $1,300 annually on charging costs. The new vehicle-to-home capabilities offer both practical and economic benefits for EV owners. This innovation aligns with the broader trend where battery storage costs are projected to decrease by 52% by 2030. This innovative technology makes EVs function as mobile power sources when parked. California residents can also access local incentives and rebates through the California Energy Commission, administered by dcbel. Every little bit helps when you’re paying California prices for… well, everything.

Deliveries of eligible vehicles began in June 2024, but only California residents can participate for now. Typical. California gets all the cool tech first.

Looking ahead, Polestar plans to expand this technology to more markets and models. Europe is already seeing similar rollouts with Zaptec Go2 AC chargers. The company aims to make bi-directional charging standard across its lineup, creating a broader ecosystem of mobile power sources.
