china leads renewable energy

While the West debates climate policies, China has quietly become the undisputed renewable energy superpower. The numbers don’t lie. By 2025, China’s renewable market hit a staggering 2,250 GW – the world’s largest installed capacity. Half the global total. Let that sink in. In 2024 alone, they added 260 GW of new renewable capacity, more than every other country combined. Not just planning for the future – dominating it.

Solar power is China’s golden child, accounting for 49% of their renewable market in 2024. Growing at 15.2% annually through 2030? Ridiculous progress. They added 72 GW of solar in just the first quarter of 2025. For perspective, that’s more than most countries’ entire renewable portfolios. Solar generation hit 96 TWh in April 2025, shattering previous records. Records that were just months old.

China’s solar dominance isn’t just impressive—it’s revolutionary. 72 GW in one quarter makes other nations look like they’re standing still.

Wind isn’t far behind. China expanded wind capacity by 60 GW in 2024, with generation jumping 16% in early 2025. Wind now makes up 13% of their electricity mix. Their offshore wind ambitions? 150 GW by 2035. America’s talking about offshore wind while China’s building it. The country is rapidly deploying massive 20 MW turbines in offshore arrays to maximize energy production. Their aggressive expansion reflects the global trend where wind energy surged by 14% in 2022 alone.

The policy approach is equally aggressive. Mandatory renewable quotas. Fines for non-compliance. Since June 2025, they’ve moved from subsidies to competitive bidding, making renewables even more cost-effective. And they’re not stopping – targets call for adding over 200 GW of wind and solar annually through 2027.

China isn’t keeping the renewable revolution to itself either. They’ve pledged $25 billion in climate finance to emerging economies, conveniently creating export markets for their equipment. Smart business. Their total renewable capacity is estimated at 1,400 GW, supplying over 35% of China’s electricity. Together, China and emerging markets account for about 60% of new renewable capacity additions globally.

India and others are following China’s playbook, deploying utility-scale projects and industrial rooftops at breakneck speed.

The renewable energy crown has a new owner. While America hesitates, China acts. Game, set, match.
