Ford is planning to launch a $30,000 electric pickup truck in 2027, positioning it as an affordable option in the growing EV market. The company calls this its “next Model T moment,” aiming to make electric vehicles accessible to average consumers. The midsize four-door pickup will be built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in the United States.

Ford’s ambitious $30,000 electric pickup represents a pivotal shift toward making EVs attainable for everyday Americans.

The truck will be the first vehicle on Ford’s new Universal EV Platform. This system reduces parts by 20% compared to typical vehicles. It also needs 25% fewer fasteners and 40% fewer workstations in the factory. Ford expects assembly to be 15% faster than current methods, helping keep costs down.

For power, the truck will use lithium iron phosphate battery cells. These don’t contain expensive materials like cobalt or nickel. The battery pack doubles as the vehicle’s floor, improving space and handling. Ford claims the truck will accelerate from 0-60 mph as quickly as a four-cylinder Mustang, which is under five seconds.

Inside, passengers will enjoy more room than in a Toyota RAV4. The truck offers storage in both a front trunk and a traditional bed with a lockable cover. The battery placement creates a quiet cabin and better driving dynamics with a low center of gravity.

Ford says the truck’s five-year ownership costs will be lower than buying a used three-year-old Tesla Model Y. This is achieved through manufacturing efficiencies and smart design choices like a shorter wiring harness that’s 10 kg lighter than comparable EVs. The transition to electric trucks represents a significant step in addressing fossil fuel dependency in the transportation sector.

The pricing strategy directly challenges both gas-powered trucks and more expensive electric models. With its focus on utility, performance, and affordability, Ford’s new electric pickup could greatly disrupt the budget truck segment when it arrives in 2027.

It’s part of Ford’s $5 billion investment in electric vehicle technology. The company aims to create thousands of jobs through this initiative while maintaining its commitment to American manufacturing. The innovative assembly process techniques implemented in production will significantly enhance productivity and sustainability.
