As the United States races to transform its energy landscape, the grid battery industry has committed over $100 billion in investments to power this transformation. This surge in funding supports an ambitious goal: integrating 18 gigawatts of new utility-scale energy storage capacity in 2025, up from nearly 11 GW in 2024.

The scale of this growth is remarkable. If projections hold true, the U.S. will install more battery capacity in 2025 than its entire accumulated total through the end of 2023. This follows a record-breaking 2024, when 10.3 GW of new capacity was added to the grid.

California and Texas currently dominate the market, together accounting for almost 75% of the nation’s total energy storage capacity, which exceeds 26 GW. While California has long led in utility-scale battery installations, Texas is set to take the lead in 2025 with approximately 7 GW of new storage compared to California’s 4.2 GW. Arizona and Nevada have also shown impressive growth, with both states more than doubling their battery capacities in 2024.

The integration of batteries with solar power is accelerating. In 2024, batteries made up a third of solar additions, with 1 GW of storage added for every 3 GW of solar. This ratio is expected to reach 60% in 2025, highlighting the growing trend of co-locating solar projects with batteries. This strategic pairing helps overcome the weather dependency that typically limits solar energy reliability.

Overall grid expansion is also picking up pace. The U.S. power grid expects to add 63 GW of new utility-scale generating capacity in 2025, almost 30% more than in 2024. Solar and battery storage together will represent 81% of these additions.

Solar capacity continues its rapid growth, with a record 30 GW added in 2024. Another 32.5 GW is projected for 2025, with Texas and California accounting for nearly half of this expansion.

This massive deployment of grid batteries signals a maturing energy storage market and a strategic shift toward integrated renewable energy solutions. As the industry expands its commitment to domestic manufacturing, battery storage is becoming critical for providing the grid flexibility and reliability needed for a renewable energy future.
