hydrogen suv partnership launched

Hyundai is bringing its NEXO hydrogen SUV to India in partnership with Indianoil. The zero-emission vehicle runs on hydrogen fuel cells, producing only water vapor as exhaust. It delivers 161 horsepower with a top speed of 111 mph, comparable to conventional SUVs. The NEXO features advanced safety systems, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and comfortable heated seats. This collaboration aims to support cleaner transportation as India develops its hydrogen infrastructure.

Hyundai’s groundbreaking hydrogen-powered NEXO SUV has made its appearance on Indian roads, bringing zero-emission technology to the country’s automotive landscape. This innovative vehicle operates on a hydrogen fuel cell system that combines hydrogen and air to generate electricity. The partnership with Indianoil marks a significant step toward cleaner transportation options in India.

The NEXO features a 95-kW fuel-cell stack working alongside a 40-kWh battery pack. Its electric motor produces 161 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque, delivering responsive acceleration for both city and highway driving. The NEXO’s impressive maximum speed of 111 mph makes it comparable to conventional gasoline-powered SUVs. Water vapor is the only emission from the tailpipe, making it truly zero-emission at point of use.

Powerful performance meets environmental responsibility with zero emissions—just pure water vapor from the tailpipe.

Safety is a priority in the NEXO design. The SUV comes equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind-Spot Collision-avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-avoidance Assist. These systems help protect drivers and passengers by automatically responding to potential hazards. The Lane Following Assist function keeps the vehicle centered in its lane at speeds up to 145 kilometers per hour.

The exterior showcases 19-inch alloy wheels and full LED headlights. Its streamlined body was designed specifically for the hydrogen fuel cell platform. Like geothermal energy sources, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer remarkable environmental benefits with minimal carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil fuel vehicles.

Inside, drivers and passengers will find a 12.3-inch touchscreen that controls navigation and media. The cabin features heated and ventilated front seats, heated outer rear seats, and a heated steering wheel for comfort in all weather conditions.

Technology integration includes Phone Connection supporting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Remote Smart Parking Assist helps with parking operations, while the Smart Adaptive Speed Control maintains safe distances in traffic. The NEXO’s recuperative braking system efficiently charges the battery using energy captured when slowing down.

The hydrogen powering the NEXO can be produced using renewable electricity or carbon-abated fossil fuels, creating a fully zero-emission pathway. This collaboration between Hyundai and Indianoil demonstrates India’s commitment to exploring alternative fuel technologies.

As hydrogen infrastructure develops, vehicles like the NEXO could play an important role in reducing transportation emissions across the country.
